Autónomo Registration in Spain

Registering as autónomo means two registrations, one with the Tax Agency and one with Social Security, and a few decisions that affect what you pay from the first month. We file both and explain what comes next.

What it is

An autónomo is a self-employed person in Spain. To start invoicing legally, you register with the Agencia Tributaria using form 036, choosing the activity code (IAE) and the tax regimes that apply, and with Social Security in the self-employed scheme (RETA), choosing your contribution base.

Since 2023, contributions depend on expected net income, and new autónomos may be entitled to a reduced initial contribution if they meet the conditions. Choosing the right activity, VAT treatment and start date avoids problems later.

Who it is for

  • EU citizens starting a business or freelance activity in Spain.
  • Non-EU residents whose authorisation allows self-employment.
  • Digital nomads who need to understand their obligations.
  • Freelancers moving their activity to Spain.

Documents usually needed

  • NIE certificate, TIE or EU registration certificate.
  • Social Security number.
  • Spanish bank account for direct debits.
  • Description of your activity and expected income.
  • Digital certificate or Cl@ve access, if you have one.

If you are a non-EU national, check first that your authorisation allows self-employment. We review this before filing.

How we handle it

  1. Activity review. We discuss your activity, clients and expected income and choose the activity code and tax regimes.
  2. Tax registration. We file form 036 with the Tax Agency.
  3. Social Security. We register you in RETA with the right contribution base and request any reduction you are entitled to.
  4. What comes next. We explain your quarterly VAT and income tax returns and, if you want, quote ongoing accounting.

Timeframes

Both registrations can usually be completed within a few days once we have your documents. The registration date matters, so we agree it with you.

Price

From 90 € + VAT for the registration. Ongoing quarterly filings and bookkeeping are quoted separately.

Frequently asked questions

Can I register as autónomo with any residence permit?

No. Non-EU nationals need an authorisation that allows self-employment. We check your document before filing.

How much will I pay to Social Security?

It depends on your expected net income and on whether you qualify for a reduced initial contribution. We estimate it with you before registering.

Do I have to charge VAT?

It depends on your activity and on where your clients are. We set this up correctly from the start.

Should I be autónomo or set up a company?

For most people starting out, autónomo is simpler. It depends on income, risk and plans. We can talk it through.
