Residence without working

Non-Lucrative Visa for Spain

The non-lucrative visa is for people who want to live in Spain on their own means, without working here. It is popular with retirees and people with savings or passive income. We prepare the file so the consulate has no reason to ask for more.

What it is

The non-lucrative residence visa allows non-EU nationals to live in Spain if they can show sufficient financial means for themselves and their family and have private health insurance. It does not allow you to work in Spain.

It is applied for at the Spanish consulate responsible for your place of residence, before you travel. The initial authorisation is granted for one year and can then be renewed for longer periods if you still meet the requirements.

Who it is for

  • Retirees with a pension or savings.
  • People living on rental income, investments or other passive income.
  • Families who want to spend a period living in Spain.
  • Current holders who need to renew.

Documents usually needed

  • Valid passport.
  • National visa application form and the residence application form.
  • Proof of sufficient financial means. The amount is a multiple of the IPREM index, updated each year: currently 400% for the main applicant plus 100% for each family member.
  • Private health insurance with an insurer authorised to operate in Spain, without co-payments.
  • Criminal record certificate, legalised or apostilled and translated.
  • Medical certificate.
  • Proof of payment of the visa fee.

Each consulate has its own list and format. We adapt the file to the consulate where you will apply.

How we handle it

  1. Case study. We check your income and savings against the current threshold and look at your family situation.
  2. Consulate checklist. We prepare the list for your consulate, including legalisations and translations.
  3. File review. We review every document and prepare the forms.
  4. Submission. You submit at the consulate with a complete file. We help with any request for additional documents.
  5. On arrival. We arrange the padrón and the TIE card.

Timeframes

Consulates usually take from a few weeks to around three months to decide. Getting appointments and legalised documents can add time, so start early.

Price

From 300 € + VAT per main applicant. Each additional family member: 100 € + VAT. Consulate fees, translations and legalisations are separate. The TIE and padrón after arrival are quoted apart.

Frequently asked questions

Can I work remotely with a non-lucrative visa?

This visa does not allow work in Spain. If you plan to work remotely, the digital nomad route is usually the right one. We can compare both for you.

Can I apply from Spain?

As a rule, the initial visa is applied for at the consulate in your country of residence, not from Spain.

How much money do I need?

The threshold is linked to the IPREM index and updated each year. We confirm the current figure and how your consulate wants you to prove it.

Can I include my family?

Yes, family members can apply with you, provided the financial means cover each person.
