Brexit TIE: Withdrawal Agreement Residence Card

British nationals who were living in Spain before 1 January 2021, and their family members, keep their rights under the Withdrawal Agreement. The TIE issued under the Agreement is the clearest way to prove it. We help you apply, renew or replace it.

What it is

The Withdrawal Agreement protects the residence rights of UK nationals who were lawfully resident in Spain before the end of the transition period, and of certain family members. Spain issues them a specific TIE that refers to the Agreement.

Some people still hold the old green EU registration certificate. It remains a valid proof of residence, but the TIE is easier to use, especially when travelling. Holders may also need to update their card after five years of residence, when they can obtain permanent status.

Who it is for

  • UK nationals resident in Spain before 1 January 2021 who still hold the green certificate.
  • UK nationals who never registered but can prove residence before that date.
  • Family members of UK nationals covered by the Agreement.
  • Card holders who need to renew or move to permanent residence.
  • People who have lost their card.

Documents usually needed

  • Valid passport.
  • The application form for the Withdrawal Agreement card, completed and signed.
  • Your green EU registration certificate, if you have one.
  • If you do not, evidence that you lived in Spain before 1 January 2021 (padrón history, rental contracts, employment or tax records).
  • Proof of payment of the official fee.
  • Recent passport-size photograph.

What evidence is accepted depends on your history. Requirements may vary; we review your case first.

How we handle it

  1. Review your history. We look at your documents and decide which evidence proves your residence best.
  2. File. We complete the form and fee document and organise your evidence.
  3. Fingerprint appointment. We book the appointment at the police office for your area.
  4. Collection. We book the collection appointment and check the card when issued.

Timeframes

Most of the time goes into the appointments, which vary by province. Cases without the green certificate can take longer if more evidence is requested.

Price

Frequently asked questions

Is my green certificate still valid?

It remains a valid proof of residence, but many holders exchange it for the TIE because it is easier to use, especially at borders.

I arrived after 2020. Does this apply to me?

No. UK nationals who moved after the transition period follow the general rules for non-EU nationals, for example the non-lucrative or digital nomad routes.

Can my family members apply?

Certain family members are covered by the Agreement, including some who join later. We check each case.

What happens after five years?

After five years of legal residence you can usually obtain permanent residence under the Agreement and a card valid for longer.
